Takeaway Readings – Pizza Collection

Reading a book from cover to cover seems to be – for many people – a very demanding task. The frenetic pace of our society and the chronic lack of time to dedicate to reading can often appear as a simple alibi, but a certain fear towards the book as an object, its size, its number of pages, even before its content, often considered boring and difficult, is evident. Furthermore, to find a book you have to go to a bookshop or a library, other places that are too often “forgotten”: only 17.4% of the population bought the last book they read in a bookshop (outside of shopping centres) and only 11.7% of the population frequents libraries (a percentage that is decreasing especially among young people)*. The idea for the project was born from the attempt to bring people closer to reading by proposing texts in a different form from that of the traditional book and bringing them physically closer to potential readers. It does not propose an entire book, but a “slice”. It is not sold in bookstores, but can be found on a stand ready for take-away.

The book, therefore, will be divided into different slices that will be placed on a common 40x60 cm pizza pan. The covers of the different slices, once placed on the pan, form a whole pizza ready to be tasted. What is the content of a single slice? Each slice contains a story inspired by a pizza flavor. The cover of the booklet (made by an illustrator) will indicate which portion of pizza you are about to read (the corner, the center, margherita, diavola, Sicilian, etc.). The hungry reader can taste a single slice, or two or more, until they take the entire content of the pan, depending on their appetite. Like any take-away product, the slice also has its own container, a small white cardboard box, die-cut and with red writing, so you can take the slices home and read them at your leisure.
